ITS Campus, GLC News \u2014<\/b>The Academic Writing Center (AWC) ITS held its annual Drop-in Workshop titled Understanding IMRaD Structure in Academic Writing online via Zoom Meeting on Monday (11\/5\/2026). This activity serves as a flexible learning platform for ITS students to enhance academic writing skills through understanding the IMRaD scientific writing structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Organized in collaboration with students from the Manufacturing System Laboratory of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) ITS, the activity was attended by 57 participants. Participants came not only from the academic community of the ISE ITS Manufacturing System Laboratory but also from various departments and education levels, including undergraduate, master\u2019s, and doctoral students interested in developing academic writing skills.<\/span><\/p>

The coordinator as well as AWC ITS tutor, Ms Meilisa S. A. Ariyanto, stated that understanding the IMRaD structure is one of the important foundations for students to develop ideas in a clear and systematic manner. Through this activity, participants are expected to be able to understand the function of each part of the IMRaD structure as well as apply it effectively in scientific writing.<\/span><\/p>

This IMRaD structure training is based on key questions that are expected by readers in each section of the format. By understanding the readers’ expectations at each stage\u2014from introduction to discussion\u2014students are expected to be able to compile scientific papers more logically, systematically, and communicatively, so that the arguments presented become stronger and easier to understand,” she said.<\/span><\/p>

The activity, which lasted for one and a half hours, began with an opening session and an introduction of the speakers. Next, the participants received material regarding an overview of academic writing and the IMRaD structure, a detailed discussion of each section of IMRaD, as well as common mistakes often found in scientific writing along with best practices for composing them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In addition, participants also received an explanation of writing techniques to create academic writing that is clearer, more structured, and easier to understand. Participant enthusiasm was evident through the discussion and interactive Q&A sessions that remained active throughout the activity.<\/span><\/p>

One of the undergraduate (S1) participants revealed that the activity provided valuable insights into research methodology and data collection procedures. According to the participant, the material presented clearly, accompanied by applicable examples, helped participants understand the concept of scientific writing more easily. “This workshop is very informative and useful, especially for understanding research methodology and data collection procedures,” they stated.<\/span><\/p>

Through the organization of this Drop-in Workshop, AWC ITS also supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 4 on Quality Education by providing flexible and adaptive learning access for students. In addition, this activity is also in line with SDGs point 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through strengthening academic writing competencies that support a culture of innovation and research development in the university environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The enthusiasm of participants during the activity shows the high interest of students in developing academic writing skills. Through similar activities, AWC ITS is expected to continue being a learning platform that supports the improvement of the academic quality of the ITS community. (*)<\/span><\/p>
