Regional Seminar on Advances In Agricultural And Municipal Waste
TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY TO ANTICIPATE FOOD AND ENERGY CRISIS
Tuesday 10th, July 2012
INTRODUCTION
As a developing country, Indonesia pays to much attention to economic growth without consideration to its environmental consequences. Negative impacts from economic development have resulted in water and wastewater pollution, floods, and landslides in many parts in Indonesia due to ignoring the environmental consequences of this development. An unhealthy environment also harms public health and decreases work productivity.
About ten years ago Indonesia started to give more attention to environmental problems such as managing agricultural waste, solid waste, waste water, floods, and water scarcity (which also used to be called sanitation). In fact, agriculture and municipal waste technology throughout the world has grown quickly over the last 20 years. Recently, agriculture and municipal waste technology has been responding to the energy crisis. For example, methane from feces in rural areas and urban landfills is being used to generate electricity or as a common fuel.
Other examples are improved energy management in waste and drinking water plants due to new system designs and materials as well as the use of grey
water when potable water is not necessary. This advances in agricultural and municipal waste technology to anticipate a food and energy crisis conference will be held to highlight new and alternative technologies to address the problems of high energy costs and the need for more food.
